How to Resize Your Men’s Ring

So, your fingers have changed shape and now your rings don’t fit.

In this article, you’ll find everything you need to know about resizing your ring, whether you need it tightened or loosened up.

How to Resize a Ring to Make it Smaller

1. Sizing Beads

These are small balls of precious metal that are added to the inside of the band by a jeweler to create a snug fit. They're semi-permanent, but easily removable if you need to resize the ring again later.

2. Spring Insert

This is a metal or silicone spring that you wrap around the inside of your ring to tighten its fit. It's springy, hence the name, and can be wrapped around and taken off as often as you want. Perfect for making 1 ring wearable on multiple fingers.

3. Sizing Bar

This is a small strip of metal, silicone, rubber, or even foam that's added to the inside of a ring. We recommend this method since it’s invisible and easily removable in case you want to switch fingers. Find out

4. Cut and Shrink

Cutting a small piece out of the band and then soldering it back together is a permanent solution that should only be done by a professional. Even then, it may leave a visible scar in your ring.

5. DIY Silicone Insert

Thoroughly clean and dry the inside of your ring and apply a thin layer of aquarium-grade silicone. Smooth it out and let it dry. This method is reversible, comfortable, and durable, ideal for a non-invasive and flexible resizing option that allows your ring to adapt perfectly to your finger.

How to Resize a Ring to Make it Larger

1. Stretching

Special tools can make a ring slightly bigger by stretching it. This method can only be used for small adjustments and won’t work for titanium, stainless steel, tungsten, and other extremely hard metals.

2. Cut and Spread

This involves cutting the band and adding an extra piece of metal in the gap. Again, this should be done by a professional and may leave a visible mark.

What Rings Can and Can't Be Resized?

Most rings made of precious metals like gold, silver, or platinum can be resized. Rings with a full diamond or gemstone band, such as eternity rings, can't be resized without affecting the design. The same goes for rings made of tungsten, stainless steel or other hard metals, and rings with natural stone or wood inlays.

Finally, the million-dollar question:

Can you resize a ring yourself?

In some cases, yes.

  1. Sizing Down with Silicone: You can add a silicone layer to the inside of the band to make it fit more snugly.
  2. Using a Mallet: You can stretch a ring by gently hammering it with a mallet, but be very careful not to damage the ring. We don’t recommend trying this with any valuable rings, because the risk is too great. Take it to a jeweler instead.
  3. Stretching with Pliers: This requires a special ring-stretching tool and a whole heap of caution. If you’re not careful, you can easily stretch the ring till it snaps.
  4. Reducing with Pliers: You can make a ring smaller by compressing it with pliers. We don’t recommend this method for any item you care too deeply about as it’s too easy to permanently deform the ring.

So there you have it, gents. There are plenty of non-permanent solutions for sizing your rings down, but for stretching them, it’s best to leave it to the professionals. Best solution: make sure you pick a ring that fits your finger. Check out this article on how to find your ring size and browse our selection of men's rings here.
